Walter Howato – Unique Water Serpents with Frogs and Kooyemsi
$1,650.00
The late, great Walter Howato (1921-2003) was known for making extremely unusual carvings. This unique katsina assemblage includes three Water Serpents (Paaloloqangs), which are green, yellow, and black. There are also two frogs (Paakwas). The yellow frog is attached to the main figure, while the blue one is free standing. The dominant green Water Serpent is made from a gourd and within it is a Kooyemsi or Mudhead, bundled in a black blanket. The green gourd is 10 1/2″ tall and 8 1/2″ wide. The two frogs are about 4″ long. What is this creation about? I have no idea. It comes from the Janice and Joseph Day collection.
