Wilson Tawaquaptewa (1873-1960) was one of the most highly regarded katsina carvers in history. There are several examples of his katsinam on this site. He also occasionally made gourd rattles and other objects of material culture. This rattle with vibrant yellow background paint has corn and cloud symbols. It rattles well when shaken. When I purchased this rattle, the design on three sides was in good shape; the fourth was worn. I had it professionally restored, so now the paint is in fine shape all around. The rattle has its original string. It is 8 1/2″ wide and 5 1/2″ wide.
