Shawn Deel – Exceptionally Detailed Tasap Katsina

Russ Hoover and I wrote about Shawn Deel in the October 2024 issue of Native American Art magazine. We emphasized that Shawn works in the Traditional Style but adds an exceptional number of very detailed, handmade accoutrements. This Tasap – a depiction of a Navajo Spirit Being – is one such example. Shawn told me this figure is also called Ma’ru. Note the tiny hand-cast conchos on the belt and shoulder strap, the handmade turquoise beaded necklace and bracelet. It also has a tall tripod on the head and matching green triangular dance wands. The featherwork is extensive and precise. The figure is 13″ to the top of tripod. Signed SDEEL on the right foot. It has a loop for hanging. Purchased directly from Shawn.
