Ryon Polequaptewa – Tawaquaptewa Interpretation with Lizard
$595.00
Ryon Polequaptewa was the great-grandson of Wilson Tawaquaptewa (1873-1960). Ryon makes very effective interpretations of his famous relative’s work. As I’ve frequently described, Tawaquaptewa never made an accurate representation of a katsina because as Village Chief (Kikmongwi) he believed that such examples should not be sold. (See Barry Walsh, 2019). Ryon makes very effective interpretations of his great-grandfather’s work. This has wide feathered ears, lots of Tawaquaptewa’s signature polka dots, and a white lizard in the mouth. The carving is 9″ tall to the top of the head with the dramatic feathers adding almost 3 more inches. The doll is signed on the feet: “Ryon Polequaptewa, Hopi, 2026.” I bought it directly from Ryon.
