  • Description

Mavasta Honyouti is one the most talented Hopi artists working today. He makes complex katsina sculptures, bas relief paintings, skateboard decks, and beyond. Recently he has created a series called, “Between the Dances.” This painting ofa Palhik Mana on wood is one from this series. The figure is tying on her kopatsoki or tablita. Mavasta explained to me that this scene is one that reflects “empowerment.” He said, “She’s showing her strength. She doesn’t need her partner to do anything for her.” 6″ by 4″. As with all his work, very precisely made.

This item was on loan to the Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe from January until June 2025 as part of Mavasta’s show, “Coming Home.”
