  • Description

Joel Monture, Mohawk, was an accomplished artist and author. He wrote “The Complete Guide to Traditional Native American Beadwork,” (Wiley and Sons, 1993). This Buffalo Society doll is especially detailed. Joel himself provided the description: “Red Horn Staff Bearer Doll of the Buffalo Society, Cheyenne Style.” He added, “with sacred staff, shield and painted and beaded shirt signifying hail stones and morning stars.” As for materials, Joels described, “deer hair roach, pigeon feather, bead necklace, red fox fur robe, beaded moccasins, and rooster hackles on shield.” The figure is 11″ tall and 10″ wide including the staff and tomahawk. I purchased this about 30 years ago from Mark Humpal, revered trader in New Hampshire.
