Henry Shelton was a seminally important figure in the art of Hopi katsina carving. He was one of the first to move into the Ultra-Realistic style. Case in point is this exceptional Ewtoto or Katsina Father. Note the care taken in rendering the folds of the shirt and kilt, the sash, and the accoutrements the katsina has in his left hand. Study all the photos to see the great artistic complexity of this figure. The katsina is 12″ tall with the standard Henry Shelton u-shaped base adding 3/4″. Signed on the bottom, “H. Shelton, Oraibi, Ariz.” This carving is an important piece of Hopi katsina history. It was made in about the 1970s.
