Dustin Holmes Sakwahote or Blue Hoot’e

I’m drawn to Dustin Holmes’ work in part because of his vibrant colors. He shared with me that he uses mostly mineral pigments. This bright Sakwahote has vibrant green, red and yellow pigments along with other darker tones. The katsina is 10 3/4″ tall including the feathers. The katsina is signed on both feet: on the right “Sakwahote” and on the left “D Holmes” and “Nauy’wyma”. Dustin says the latter is his Hopi name which translates as “Sneaky Coyote” – quite a name indeed. Dustin is from Munqapi and is Badger/Butterfly Clan.
