Darance Makwesa Chimerica – Wakas or Cow Katsina

Among my favorite katsinam by Darance Makwesa Chimerica are his Wakaskatsinam or Cows. This is a strong rendition, carved and painted precisely which is characteristic of all his work. This Cow is 11 1/4″ tall not including the feathers. The Cow has red horsehair, bright parrot feathers, and small shells as adornments. It is signed on the bottom with his usual D with a dot inclosed. Darance is featured in my book, “The Great Tradition of Hopi Katsina Carvers,” (Rio Nuevo, 2019).
