Darance Chimerica Taatangaya or Yellow Jacket

This is an infrequently carved figure, Taatangaya. Some refer to it as a Hornet but Darance tells me it is a Yellow Jacket. Perhaps that depends on the village or mesa. The katsina has beautiful colors. It has carefully tied burgundy colored yarn surrounding both ears. There are colorful parrot feathers on the top of the head. The height is 10 3/4″ to the top of the striped horns. Darance is featured in our book, “The Great Tradition of Hopi Katsina Carvers: 1880 to Present.”  The katsina is signed on the bottom of the kilt.
