Cimmaron told me this asymmetrical figure is a Mongwu or Great Horned Owl katsina. Cimmaron said he only has one horn because he’s on a tree and the other can’t be seen! Cimmaron said the corn husk on the face is his beak. The figure is 15″ long and 5″ wide. In my book, “Hopi Katsina Anomalies,” Cimmaron Grover is featured in the chapter on “Unusual Wood.” This Owl is one such example made with corral wood. Cimmaron sometimes uses this material because he has run out of cottonwood root and he likes its aged texture. He told me he got this corral wood from an old sheepherder in Dinnebito, AZ. It has articulated arms and legs. This is one of Cimmaron’s most unusual creations!
