1920s Navan Katsina
$7,500.00
This beautiful old katsina is a bit of a puzzle. The face is that of a Navan or Velvet Shirt katsina, but the carving is not wearing the signature shirt. Rather, it just has standard body paint. I asked several knowledgeable Hopi to identify it and they all said, “Navan.” It’s also possible that it’s a “Hisat” katsina – an ancestor who on longer appears. No matter, it is a beautiful carving that has the dignity of old Hopi katsinam. It is 8 3/4″ tall with the base adding 1/2″. From a French collection.
