Early Ernie Moore Wolf Katsina
$195.00
I believe this small Kwewu or Wolf katsina was an early carving by Ernie Moore. It is smaller and less developed than his later work such as the large Crow Mother and Palhik by Ernie on this site. He signed this Wolf carving simply “Ernie.” It is 7 1/2″ tall including the base.
Ernie Moore was an especially gifted carver. He was born in 1934 in Hopi village of Munkapi. He passed in 2009. He won many awards including being designated an “Arizona Living Treasure,” in 2005. He won Best of Show at the 2003 Heard Museum fair for his 24-piece set depicting a Palhik Mana ceremony. This set is now in the permanent collection of the American Museum of Natural History. Earnest’s life and work was featured in the January 2004 issue of “Native Peoples” magazine.
For many years Earnest worked as a graphic artist. The precision of his carving and exceptionally fine painting style reflected his graphic artist training.
