Otellie Jackson was the first woman to make katsinam – a controversial action at the time. She did so to support her family as her husband had gone blind with glaucoma. This simple putsqatihu or cradle katsina depicting horses or Kawaykatsinam on the face is by Onita Jackson, one of Otellie’s granddaughters. The katsina is 8 1/4″ tall including the feathers and 6″ wide also including the feathers. This katsina is depicted on page 127 of my book, “Hopi Katsina Anomalies, the Unusual, Rare and Unique,” 2024. The chapter is on diverse women carvers over the years.
