This is a colorful version of a 1930s Hopi Sipiknitaqa or Whipper Katsina Guard. He appears as a Whipper during the Powamuya or Bean Dance ceremony and has many other roles. As noted by Alph Secakuku, Sipikni Katsinam maintain order among members of the audience and the Clowns or Kooyemsit. They come in different colors representing different directions. This carving is 8 3/4″ tall not including the fluff on the top of the head. He has a strong presence.
