Manuel Denet Chavarria – Rare Triptych

$950.00

  • Description

I’ve acquired art by Manny Chavarria since the early 1990s and this is the only triptych or three-figured carving I’ve seen by him. Top to bottom, the katsinam are a male Hehey’a and two female Palhikwmanas. These are carved in a 19th century style in that they have genitals. Early in the 20th century genitals disappeared on Hopi carvings because of the influence of prudish Christian missionaries. Done in his distressed style, the carvings are 14 1/2″ tall and 8″ wide including the feathers. Not signed but acquired directly from Manny in 2019. Close to unique!
