Wayne Alfred Warrior Mask

Wayne Alfred, Kwakwakawakw (formerly known as Kwakiutl) is one the foremost NW Coast artists working today. His work is featured in numerous books on NW Coast art such as Gary Wyatt’s “Spirit Faces” and “Mythic Beings.” A mask by Wayne is also on the cover of Steven Brown’s book, “Native Visions.”

This mask is a Warrior Mask, thus the bleeding wounds on the face. The mask is painted with a green wash that allows the grain of the cedar to show through. The mask is 9” tall by 6 ½” wide. With the horsehair, it is 21” long. This mask was carved shortly after Wayne traveled to Japan. The features of the mask reflect the Asian lineage of the Samurai.
