Shawn Deel – “Traditional/ Realism” Komantsi Katsina – SOLD

In the October/ November 2024 issue of Native American Art magazine, Russ Hoover and I published an article on the katsinam of Shawn Deel and Aaron Fredericks. The article featured their emerging style that we called “Traditional/ Realism.” This Komantsi by Shawn Deel is one such example. It is made in a traditional stand-up form, but has an exceptional number of realistic details added. Shawn described this saying, “the katsina is made of cottonwood root with partridge, grouse and parakeet feathers. It includes, “dyed red wool, leather, hand-made miniature silver conchos, and horse hair tassles. The drum is cottonwood root with a hollowed-out core with deer hide that was tanned 9 years ago.” There are many more details from Shawn that I can provide. The katsina is 14″ tall and 4 1/2″ wide. The drum is 3″ tall by 2 1/4″ wide. Exceptional katsina art by Shawn.
