Shawn Deel – Exceptional Katsina Art – Apache Katsinam – SOLD

Shawn Deel specializes in making katsinam with elaborate hand-made accoutrements. This pair of Yotse’e or Apache katsinam are exceptional examples. He has tufa cast the miniature rifles in silver with fine detail. As he told me, “The caps are made of leather… silver conchos are stamped and polished with steel wool…the shells on the wrists are from last year’s Maui trip…the shields are replicas of Apache shields, the small necklaces are made of Kingman turquoise and Italian coral, the leggings are burlap…. Feathers on top are grouse and chicken.”  Note how one of the katsinam is wearing a hand-painted, fringed leather yolk. The katsinam are 12″ tall including the feathers. They are signed on the bottom of each left foot “S Deel.”
