Ryan Gashweseoma Kowaako or Chicken

This is a fun, carefully made Kowaako or Chicken katsina. The artist is Ryan Gashweseoma who is featured in my book on “The Great Tradition of Hopi Katsina Carver” (2019; Rio Nuevo). The katsina has dramatic maroon fabric on the ears and raw cotton on the head. The carving is 8 1/4″ to the top of the comb with feathers adding 2″. As with all of Ryan’s work, precisely carved and painted.
