Otto Pentewa Havasupai Katsina – Published – SOLD
Otto Pentewa (1880s-1961) was a very important carver in Hopi katsina history. He was the second after Tawaquaptewa (1871-1960) to be acknowledged as a master. Some of his carvings were very simple, largely in bas relief. Others were elaborate and this Kooninkatsintaqa or male Havasupai katsina is one such example. Pentewa took a lot of time on this carving. Note the leather garment and armbands with beadwork, the basket with three feather drops, and the elaborate feather work on the head. The katsina is 12″ tall with the professional base adding 1/2″. This katsina is published on page 40 of my book, “The Great Tradition of Hopi Katsina Carvers, 1880-Present.” (Rio Nuevo, 2019).
