Mary Coriz Lovato (b. 1936) is a famous Kewa (Santo Domingo Pueblo) jewelry maker. Her father, Leo Coriz (1914-1997), has been credited with keeping jewelry-making alive in the pueblo. This beautiful pendant has a corn and moon/sun motif. The orange material is spondylus shell and the blue is turquoise. The pendant is good sized at 2 7/8″ by 1 7/8″. The handmade chain is 24″ long. Incised on the back are Mary’s initials “McL” with Mary’s Corn Clan symbol and the date it was made: “16”. This came from the Joseph and Janice Day collection.
