Manfred Susunkewa Matyawkatsina or Handprint

In my opinion, one of Manfred Susunkewa’s signature carvings is the Matyaw or Handprint. This figure is a Racer or Runner katsina. The carving is 9 3/4″ tall. As shown in photo 4, some of the cottonwood grain has “bled” through the paint – a not uncommon issue. Fortunately, this discoloration is on the back of the carving so it’s not visible when hung on a wall. As with all of Manfred’s carvings, he uses vegetal and mineral pigments exclusively. Signed “MSusunkewa” with his Spider Clan symbol.
