Jimmie Kewanwytewa – Miniature Hahay’iwuuti Katsina – SOLD
Jimmie Kewanwytewa (1888-1965) made katsinam in many different sizes. My book, “The Great Tradition of Hopi Katsina Carvers” depicts a set of miniature Qoqlo katsinam by Jimmie on page 58. These are from the Museum on Northern Arizona (MNA)collection, where Jimmie worked for many years. This Hahay’iwuuti katsina is 3 1/4″ tall (not including the feather) and 2 1/4″ wide from ear to ear. This katsina is not signed, but it is clearly his work as the hands, feet and paints are entirely consistent with his forms. On two occasions I’ve examined the 120 katsinam by Jimmie in the MNA collection so I’ve done my homework on this topic.
