Important Collection of 10 Hopi Cradle Katsinam – 1890 -1910 – SOLD

  • Description
This is an important collection of Hopi putsqatithu or cradle katsinam from 1890-1910. They are some of the earliest examples I've seen including museum collections and diverse publications. Putsqatithu are said to be the earliest form of Hopi katsinam. The majority of this group appear to be 19th Century given the simplicity, even roughness, of the forms and antiquated patina. Some are cut from cottonwood root in jagged, unfinished fashion. Six of the 10 are Hahay'iwuuti, commontly referred to as the Grandmother katsina. Two are unusual due to the number of fingers; one has 13 and the other 19! These early makers were clearly not striving for realism! The oldest of the group appears to be the Kookopolo in the middle of the bottom row. It is so worn only the facial characteristics survive. Two, as shown in the separate photo, have raised features including a ruff, mouth and arms. This suggests later dating for these two.
