Earl Arthur – Female Yaponcha or Wind God

$595.00

  • Description
When I purchased this figure, I had no idea it was considered controversial. It's the only example of the female version of Yaponcha or the Wind God that I've ever seen on the market. It only appears in one book, "Kachinas, Spirit Beings of the Hopi," by Brent Ricks and Al Anthony with art by Neil David, Sr. (Avanyu, 1993). On pages 98-99 of that book is a painting of Yaponcha with comments from individuals from different villages. For example, "He is a diety who is really respected and feared. He and his name are forbidden to be even mentioned in the kivas..." from Shungopavi. And, "He is neither a deity nor a Kachina and is feared by the Hopi people...This being should not be included in the book" from Old Oraibi. This figure is 11" tall and 7" wide. The wild hair is made from corn husk. It is signed on the bottom of the base, "Female Wind God by Earl Arthur, Hopi. 2014." To say the least, unique.
