Dominic East – Hehey’a Weighing Cornmeal

$895.00

  • Description

Excellent one-piece carving done in the ultra-realistic style by Dominic East who is Corn Clan from Walpi Village. As Dominic explained to me, Hehey’a katsinam travel with Ogres and evaluate Hopi children as to their conduct. Here, the Hehey’s is weighing two bowls of cornmeal (provided by a child). He is evaluating the taste and weight of the cornmeal. He looks fierce as his role requires. The carving is 9″ tall and 6″ wide. I especially like the detailed carving of the katsina’s garment and headpiece, the hollowed-out log, and the stone wall on which he is sitting. He has signed the base with his name, village, corn clan symbol, and the katsina’s name. Dominic comes from a distinguished Hopi carver family. His grandfather is Tino Youvella and his uncle, Alexander Youvella.
