1910 Hemis – Emry Kopta Provenance
$8,500.00
A Hemiskatsina from 1910-1920 with excellent provenance. From the Emry Kopta collection. He lived on Hopi for over a decade starting in 1912 and was adopted into a Hopi family. He took scores of photos of Hopi life and ceremonies which are found in the collections of the Smithsonian, the Heard, and the MNA. He also was a sculptor. The carving has “Kopta 21.” written on the bottom of the kilt in old black ink. The katsina is substantial at 17″ tall by 5 1/2″ wide. Worth noting is that tableta is not added on. The carving is all one piece. The execution is rather simple indicative of the 1910 dating. I added the professional base because this fine carving deserves to be displayed well. The base adds 7/8″.
