1910-1920 Early Unfinished Katsina
$1,500.00
This old cottonwood root woodcarving has the features of a 1910-1920 Hopi katsina including arms and hands in the so-called "stomach ache" position and crude asymmetrical feet. The carving has a coat of douma or clay applied but the maker proceeded no further with the creation of the katsina. As shown in photo 5, there is some insect damage on the back, suggesting it was in storage somewhere for years. The carving is 6 3/4" tall, with the professional base I obtained, adding 1/2". This is the earliest unfinished katsina I've encountered.
